AdvertisementAdvertisementThis as-told-to essay is from an interview with Stacie DaPonte, 31, about living in a tiny house outside Toronto. That set me researching what it would take to downsize to a tiny house in the countryside. The benefits of living in a tiny house in the countryMy front yard is a river and I'm surrounded by ducks. AdvertisementAdvertisementI couldn't buy the tiny house all at once with cash, so I am paying off a line of credit. Tiny living is a reality I hope more people see and read about.

Brian Trautman has spent the past 14 years living on a 53-foot sailboat, sailing to 46 countries. I gave my business partners my year's notice in 2008 and started selling everything to buy a sailboat. Starting my lifelong sailing adventureI bought SV Delos, a 53-foot Amel Super Maramu sailboat, for $390,000 in 2008. We left the boat with my brother and his girlfriend, who continued to sail Delos across the Atlantic to Antigua. When she was 4 months old, all three of us flew back to Antigua to reboard Delos and sail the Caribbean.

I'd always harbored a dream of living on a canal boat. Remote work is easy from a narrowboatI work full-time for Microsoft as a partner manager and support the Nordic region. Boats need a lot of maintenance, but they can appreciate in value, especially if you're diligent about upkeep. You can buy a shorter canal boat, but then obviously you lose space. There are some downsides of living in a canal boat, but I'm happier overallThe hardest part is planning.

I'm a cruise organizer for Bare Necessities Tour and Travel, a nudist cruise company. I spend all year as part of a team planning our two sailings: a February trip aboard a big cruise ship called our Big Nude Boat, which has 3,000 passengers, and a smaller cruise in summer. Now I'm vice president of sales for the two Bare Necessities cruises. Entertainers and staffers on a Bare Necessities cruise wear clothes. On our Big Nude Boat with a little more than 2,100 passengers, about 70% of guests on board are repeat guests.
As cruise director, Wells often hosts the evening entertainment. I was quickly connected with Holland America, who flew me out to audition for a cruise director role in April 2020. Now, as of 2022, I'm the cruise director for Holland America, working aboard several ships, including most recently on Zuiderdam. A day in my life as a cruise directorAs the cruise director, I'm the first and last face that any guest sees on any sailing. What most people don't realize is that cruise ship workers don't ever have a day off during their contract.
